Coach Rooney recently completed his fifth year at the helm of the Keelhaulers and these five years have been the most successful in the program's history. In his first year, the team went a respectable 14-14 including key wins over National Tournament qualifiers. The team took a step forward his second year as they won 17 games, a total that was among the highest in school history. The positive momentum continued during the 2009-2010 season as the Keelhaulers again set the school record for wins and won the conference championship. In fact, the championship was the school's first intercollegiate championship in any sport. The season included wins over several NAIA Division One teams as well as an upset victory over the #5 team in country.
The positive momentum continued in the 2010-2011 season as the Keelhaulers advanced to and hosted the Cal Pac Conference Championship for the first time in school history. This past year proved to be the best in an impressive run as Cal Maritime again set the school record for wins with twenty-one. Included in those wins was a victory over eventual National Champion Oregon Tech. The Keelhaulers also went a perfect 12-0 in Cal Pac conference play, the first time a team has accomplished that feat in conference history. After capturing the regular season championship, Cal Maritime defeated Simpson University and Holy Names University in the conference tournament to advance to the NAIA National Tournament. The trip to "Big Dance" marked the first in school history.
As is often the case with team success, several Keelhaulers have gained recognition over the past five years. In his short time at Cal Maritime, Rooney has coached two All Americans (Andrew Medeiros, Isaiah Moore), had his players earn All-Conference accolades fourteen times (Cody Gatton, John Stiles, Andrew Medeiros (twice), Josh Greenwell (three times), Haven Piatt, Jordan Birchell, Isaiah Moore, David Prendeble, Michael Weimer, Keven Campbell, and Isaiah Johnson) the Freshman of the Year for 2008-2009 (Zac Kinman) and 2009-2010 (Jordan Birchell) as well as two Academic All Americans (Andrew Johnson and Andrew Medeiros). For his work, Rooney has been named California Pacific Conference Coach of the Year three times including this past year.
Coach Rooney has established a program built on toughness and defensive accountability shown by the fact that his teams are consistently in the top 5 nationally for defensive production. (points allowed per game). On the offensive end, the motion offense employed by the Keelhaulers allows for the talents of players to be maximized.
Prior to coming to Maritime, Coach Rooney spent the 2006-2007 season as an assistant coach under Ken Scalmanini at Claremont McKenna College where the team finished with a 15-10 record in the always competitive SCIAC conference. Claremont McKenna ranked in the top 5 nationally for points allowed during the 2006-2007. Coach Rooney was responsible for recruiting, guard play, practice and game organization, and counseling for career development. Prior to his time at Claremont McKenna, Coach Rooney had 3 successful seasons at NCAA Division II San Francisco State (1 year) and NAIA school Dominican University (2 years) as an assistant under the tutelage of Bill Treseler. At San Francisco State, Rooney assisted in recruiting efforts that led to a six win improvement. At Dominican University, Rooney was directly involved in helping the program win consecutive California Pacific Conference Championships as well back-to-back berths in the NAIA National Tournament in Branson, Missouri. During his time at Dominican, the program also reached a top 5 national ranking and set the school record for wins. Rooney has worked with three NAIA All Americans (David Moore, Marcus Williams, and Andrew Medeiros).
