Fitzgerald becomes the first Sports Information Director in the department's history. He had been the Keelhaulers play-by-play broadcaster for soccer and basketball since the fall of 2014, and was the Media Director of the Vallejo Admirals Professional Baseball Team since the club's inception in 2013.
"Tim has been the voice of the Keelhaulers on 89.5 FM KZCT in Vallejo for the past few years and appreciates what the Maritime Academy represents," Athletic Director Marv Christopher said. "Tim brings the knowledge and experience necessary to expand our communications within the NAIA, Cal Pac Conference and our local community. We look forward to the growth in our social media, website, web streaming and local news media that Tim will provide."
Fitzgerald will be responsible for news releases, media guides, media inquiries, web management, publicity and promotion of events, stat keeping, reporting to the NAIA and Cal Pac Conference, and management of the game day operations for home games.
"I'm thrilled to be a full-time member of the Cal Maritime Athletic Department," Fitzgerald said. "From the first day I was here as a broadcaster I could tell this is somewhere I wanted to be. There's a lot to be done since it's a brand new position, but I started the Admirals media department from scratch and there are more resources to work with here at Cal Maritime."
Fitzgerald studied Mass Communications and Broadcast Journalism at Saint Louis University, and returned to sports in 2012 after almost 10 years as an editor and writer in the health field.
"I restarted my career and went back into sports five years ago, and it's very gratifying to be able to take the next step," Fitzgerald said. "I hope to have the Cal Maritime Athletic Department take the next step in its sports media presentation and local profile."
The new SID position will also be a liaison between athletics and the University's communications and advancement functions.
"Tim will also be responsible for athletic fundraising tasks," Christopher said. "He will be very beneficial in this area as he has the connection to the local community and has a great product to promote in our Keelhauler family."
The fundraising will help increase the operating budget for the athletic department and for scholarships.
The Vallejo Admirals have the largest Facebook following in the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs, despite having just won their first championship in franchise history in 2017. Fitzgerald was instrumental in the team's media reach and creation some of its best promotions. The Admirals Media Department also had the largest staff and the highest retention rate of volunteers and interns.
"Working in independent baseball has prepared me for the long hours and working with students, as minor league baseball is very intern driven," Fitzgerald said. "I'm happy to have done it all right here in Vallejo."
