Cal Maritime's men's basketball team used an explosive second half to earn a 70-55 road victory over host La Sierra University on Saturday night. The win marks the Keelhaulers' seventh victory in a row and runs their California Pacific Conference record to 10-2 as they remain in first place with two games remaining in the regular season.
The first twenty minutes looked like it would be a rough night for Cal Maritime as the team struggled to get on track. La Sierra's stellar defense held the Keelhaulers to 19% shooting and the home team took a 29-19 lead into the halftime break. Fortunately for Cal Maritime and for the second time this week, the team responded from a half time deficit with stellar second half play. After struggling mightily to make perimeter shots in the first half, the Keelhaulers exploded for 51 second half points led by 9 three pointers. The offensive charge was led by junior point guard Daniel Solis who knocked down 5 shots from distance to pace the team with a game high 17 points. Solis was joined in double figures by Phil Randles (15 points), Daniel Radford (14 points) and Justin Eisen (10 points). Travis Arenas continued his impressive rebounding efforts as he led the Keelhaulers with 10 rebounds including 5 on the offensive end. Another important factor in the game's turnaround was Cal Maritime's outstanding defense. The Keelhaulers held La Sierra to only 35% shooting from the field.
The Keelhaulers return home from their final regular season road trip to take on Simpson University on Thursday night. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
