CMA Rugby lost to defending D1AA national champions UC Davis 34 - 17 in a pre-season friendly at CMA's Bodnar Field. Down 22-5 at half, the Keelhaulers came out roaring in the 2nd half, controlling possession and tempo that saw CMA cut the lead down to 22-17. With 12 minutes to go, CMA's #9 CJ Ferrigno looked to have scored the equalizer near the posts only to be called for a double movement. Frenetic action ruled the final 10 minutes only to see UC Davis' defense turn two Keelhauler miscues into 2 easy tries.
When asked about the game, CMA Coach Steven Hiatt said "UC Davis showed their championship character and didn't crack when we finally were able to put them under consistent pressure. Allowing scores off of intercepts, charge-downs, and miskicks were costly every time and highlight areas we need to improve; however, I was proud of the Keelhaulers' ability to respond to the National Champions' speed of execution and get better as the game went along. Hopefully, we will learn valuable lessons from this and be able to consider this a "good" loss."
The Keelhaulers open league play this Saturday when they host the Sonoma State University rugby team at Bodnar Field. Kickoff is at 10am.
