The Cal Maritime men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a thrilling 70-69 victory over visiting Corban University. The game marked the final contest of the annual Frank Dye Invitational celebrating the longtime contributions of Cal Maritime supporter Frank Dye.
The match-up proved to be a back and forth affair throughout the night with neither team able to gain much separation. The Keelhaulers headed into halftime with a slim four point lead at 34-30. The game would go down to the final whistle with Corban's Chris Martin making a contested three pointer with under 30 seconds to go to tie the game at 69. After a Cal Maritime time-out, the Keelhaulers' senior Daniel Radford made a strong drive to the basket. While his first attempt was off the mark, he was able to track down an offensive rebound and was fouled attempting a last second shot. Radford was able to send the enthusiastic crowd home happy as he calmly sank the game winning free throw.
Martin led Corban with a game high 22 points and was joined in double figures by Michael Seng, who finished with 12.
For Cal Maritime, Radford led the team with 20 points and junior Adam Armstead chipped in with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
The Keelhaulers are back in action next Sunday as they travel to face the always tough Southern Oregon Raiders. Tip off in Ashland, Oregon is scheduled for 2pm.
