March 29, 2015 – The Cal Maritime crew team continued their strong spring season with a solid performance at the San Diego Crew Classic this weekend. Entering the collegiate varsity eight race, the Keelhaulers had not advanced beyond the heats in recent years. In the first heat of the morning, Cal Maritime lined up with Purdue, University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount, USC, UC Irvine, and Cal State Long Beach. The Keelhaulers finished in sixth place, just 1 second behind fifth place and 5 seconds behind fourth place to earn a spot in the third finals. In that final, the Keelhaulers finished third, behind Loyola Marymount and Sonoma State, and ahead of University of Puget Sound, Lewis and Clark, and University of Illinois, despite being seeded in the outside lane. “I’m proud of the gains our team has made this year, and how this boat responded this weekend,” says coach Mike Tressel. “This race is extremely competitive, but we held strong in both races against some tough crews.”The team travels to Chico on April 4th for a dual meet.
