California Maritime Academy men's basketball coach Bryan Rooney has announced the signing of San Benito High School guard Jordan Belton for the 2012-2013 season.
The six foot one Belton joins Cal Maritime after a standout high school career at San Benito under head coach David Kaplansky. He also played travel basketball with West Valley Basketball Club under the direction of Bob Bramlett. Belton earned 1st Team All League in consecutive seasons, was named Male Athlete of the Year and led San Benito into the Central Coast Section playoffs. During these playoffs, he elevated his game as he scored 33 points in a quarterfinal win. During his senior year, Belton led the Haybalers in scoring at 15 points per game and was among the team's leaders in assists.
"We are thrilled that Jordan is going to be a Keelhauler! His combination of athleticism, skill, and work ethic have allowed him to have an excellent high school career. I am most excited because Jordan's ceiling is extremely high and he has the opportunity to have a tremendous college career at Cal Maritime. A dedicated student, Jordan will be a favorite of Keelhauler fans because of his commitment to maximize his potential in the classroom and on the court," commented Head Coach Bryan Rooney.
Jordan explained his commitment by saying, "In talking with Coach Rooney and coming up to visit I knew it was the right school for me. The spirit, team effort and everything that the basketball team strives for is what I really enjoyed. Also, the job opportunities after school that could be available for me with the education I will receive is a huge plus."
Belton joins Cal Maritime as the program comes off the best season in school history as the Keelhaulers set the school record for wins, won the Cal Pac Conference with an undefeated record, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. The 2012-2013 season begins as the Keelhaulers host Cal Maritime Invitational starting November 2nd.
