California Maritime Academy men's basketball coach Bryan Rooney has announced the signing of Irvine Valley College forward Christian Scott for the 2012-2013 season.
The six foot four Scott joins Cal Maritime after playing his freshman year for Irvine Valley head coach Jerry Hernandez. As a freshman, Christian earned a starting spot the second half of the season for the Lasers and finished the year averaging 4.6 points per game and 3.4 rebounds per game. Showing consistent improvement throughout the year, Scott played his best basketball at the end of the year as he recorded a double double (11 points, 10 rebounds) against Fullerton College in the last regular season game and scored 10 points in Irvine Valley's state playoff match up against eventual Final Four participant Antelope Valley College. Christian was also the only Irvine player to shoot over 50% from the floor.
Scott also enjoyed an outstanding high school career as he prepped at University High School in Irvine. A three year varsity starter, he was named All CIF three consecutive years as he finished his high school career with 1,476 points. He also finished his time at University with impressive rebounding totals as he averaged over 11 rebounds a game. His senior proved to be his best season as he averaged 24.6 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game. Scott will have three years of eligibility remaining for the Keelhaulers.
Coach Rooney was thrilled about Scott's commitment, "Christian played in one of the best junior college programs in the state. He is used to competing everyday at a high level and making winning plays. As a player, we really love Christian's versatility. He was a big time scorer in high school and this year his growth as a defensive player allows for great optimism that he will have a fantastic career at Cal Maritime. More importantly, he is an excellent student and a tremendous teammate. The Keelhauler family is very proud to have Christian as part of our group."
Scott commented on his decision to attend Cal Maritime, "I am very excited to have committed to Cal Maritime and I look forward to being a big part in the basketball program as well as the school itself. I can't wait to get started as a Keelhauler student-athlete!"
Scott joins Cal Maritime as the program comes off the best season in school history as the Keelhaulers set the school record for wins, won the Cal Pac Conference with an undefeated record, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. The 2012-2013 season begins as the Keelhaulers host Cal Maritime Invitational starting November 2nd.
